Hey, welcome back to The SCEM VIEW, with Deric. By now, you know, I’m pursuing a master’s degree in Strategic Communication at Troy University. My blog (which I like to pretend is a popular prime time talk show where strategic communication and popular culture fuse) was originally created to explore and discuss various topics and content in a previous class, Strategic Communication & Emerging Media (SCEM), but I have since completed that course and am now taking COM 6610 Leadership. I decided to hold on to the name “The SCEMView” because it's catchy and you guys already know it…so why not! And so, here we are. Let's keep riding this thing out.
Our last show, week four, we dealt with Leadership and Communication with Internal, External and Government groups. A few points covered were : Everyday Leadership, Exploring Public Sector Communication Performance, Perceptions of power in government communication and Promoting internal communication. We ended with homework. I asked you to visit the article by a Forbes provided near the bottom of my post. Did you did read? Good!
Well, we’re now at week five in 6610. This week we focused on developing strategic communication visions and leadership. This was a very interesting subject considering though very similar, leadership and management is different. There is a lot of confusion about the relationship between leadership and management. Many people use the terms interchangeably. Others see them as separate, but give different reasons why. Most dictionaries suggest leadership and management are quite similar - guiding or controlling a group of people to achieve a goal. Many would say the main difference between leaders and managers is
that leaders have people follow them while managers have people who work for them. As fellow classmate Sha’kiera Rich expressed, leadership is more of directing an organization to change, while management is more of how those changes will be implemented.No matter how we define the two or categorize them, management and leadership are both very important aspects that an organization needs to thrive. In addition, I also believe a great leader is a good manager and a great manager is an even better leader.
On the subject of leadership and management, we’ve learned that a great leader must have a vision for their team/organization. I say, this is a key component in the making of any good leader. V I S I O N. The following was shared earlier: This my overall mission and aim (vision) in leadership and considering this week is all about vision and leadership, I figured I would share a little bit with you all today.
My life’s mission is to use my artistry, gifts and influence on a mainstream level to not only satisfy an appetite for success as an artist and entrepreneurial philanthropist but to fulfill a duty that I believe I have to help people and impact them in such a way that their quality of life is enriched. In simpler terms, everything I do and aspire to become, falls under two major categories; art/entertainment and service! This became very clear to me in recent years. Like most people, I too initially sought out to establish myself in a field where I thought I'd do well and earn a decent living. Well, that hasn't changed much; however, I now aim to align my life with what I believe is my duty as a human and child of God. I intend (my vision) to use all of what he has gifted me with to reach my immediate community as well as communities at large- in various ways.
